A single rice-processing unit begins operation in Sreepur, Gazipur with eleven employees.
Univer Food Ltd. began as a small rice-processing unit in Sreepur, Gazipur, set up by a family that had traded in staples for two generations. The first year's output was 900 tonnes of milled rice sold to wholesalers who put their own names on it.
The turning point came in 2004, when the company decided it would rather answer to consumers than to wholesalers, and launched Ruposhi — its first branded spice line. Packet spices were an unfamiliar idea in most Bangladeshi kitchens at the time. Convincing a household to trust a sealed packet over the neighbourhood mill took nearly four years and a laboratory that could prove what was inside.
That laboratory is still the centre of the company. Six brands followed Ruposhi, each one launched only after the plant could make it to the same standard: Nabanna, Shonali, Rannaghar, Mishtibela, Univer Kitchen and Tulip.

A single rice-processing unit begins operation in Sreepur, Gazipur with eleven employees.
Our first consumer brand — packet spices, at a time when almost nobody in Bangladesh bought them.
Staples and edible oil are added, and the Gazipur site expands to twelve acres.
A container of Ruposhi masala ships to the United Arab Emirates. Nine more markets follow within two years.
The whole plant is brought under a single certified food-safety management system.
Daily spice capacity rises by 40 tonnes and the Sreepur plant moves to three-shift operation.
Most food companies of our size outsource at least one step. We deliberately do not. Milling, refining, roasting, baking, blending, bottling and packing all happen inside the Sreepur park, on lines we own and staff we train.
It is a more expensive way to run a food business. It is also the only way we know to answer a complaint honestly — because there is no third party to point at.
Talk to our trade desk — we ship to 42 countries and onboard new partners every quarter.
